TI-84 AI integrator
A local model on a TI-84 Plus CE that solves integrals and shows its steps
An in-progress experiment: running a small local model on a TI-84 Plus CE calculator so it can solve integrals and show worked steps — no network, no cloud, just the calculator.
01
Problem
A TI-84 Plus CE has a few megabytes of storage and a 48 MHz processor. Can a model small enough to fit still be useful for calculus homework — solving integrals and, more importantly, showing the steps?
02
What I built
- A pipeline that trains and quantises a tiny sequence model for symbolic integration steps.
- A calculator-side runtime in C for the TI-84 Plus CE that loads the model and renders steps on screen.
03
Technical decisions
- Everything runs on-device; there is no link cable or network involved at runtime.
- Correctness is checked against a symbolic solver during training so the model is graded on the answer, not just the steps.
04
Results
In progress — currently fitting the model within the calculator's memory budget.
05
What I'd do next
- Widen coverage from polynomial and trig integrals to substitution and by-parts.
- Publish the toolchain and a demo video.
